Her voice was described as being one of the national treasures, she was most certainly an extremely gifted songstress and actress who will be extremely missed. The Look For Less: Brandy's Tweed Shorts Suit on Wendy Williams

I was watching The Wendy Williams Show last week (How you doin'?) and Brandy was on the show, with the cast of The Game. Brandy was rocking this really fierce blue tweed short suit, with red YSL pumps...and I've been looking for something comparable because I lovedd it. According to Style Me Prissy, Brandy is rocking the "Harare" Tweed Short Suit by Stella & Jamie with the shorts retailing for $229, and the Jacket for $349. As a Bella on a budget, that's not a very cost effective option for me (I'm just not ballin' like that, I will be one day, it just hasn't happened yet LOL) so the obvious solution was to try and recreate the look for less.

I went to H&M on Saturday, and I came across these sky blue tweed shorts (they're not exactly like Brandy's, but they're close enough for me) and I purchased them for $29.95. I couldn't find a jacket to go with it in the store, but I did find the matching jacket online for $49.95 so I'm going to have to either patiently wait for them to get it in at my local H&M or hunt it down at a different location. I intend on wearing the shorts with a white short sleeve V-Neck Tee, and silver wedges...once I get some lol.

Real Talk: 11 Things I Learned in 2011

As the year winds down, I can't help but reflect on a lot of the experiences I had over the year...and what I've learned from them. So here it goes, 11 Things I Learned in 2011:

1) To give thanks to God daily. I've always been a thankful person, and I don't take stuff for granted...but I've learned to make it a habit to be extra thankful for everything in my life. Theres no such thing as a "small" blessing.

2) To always tell the people you love how you feel about them. My grandfather passed away a few days after thanksgiving, he lived in Africa so it's not like I could really go see him and stuff...but I had peace know that in the last conversation I had with him (before I knew anything was really wrong) that I told him that I loved him.

3) That letting stuff go and forgiving people is a process. It doesn't happen overnight, and sometimes old feelings can try and pop up...but once you deal with those emotions, and figure out WHY you feel that way, it helps you to move on.

4) That I CAN rock red lipstick =D

5) "A man's gift makes room for him, And brings him before great men." - Proverbs 18:16. Don't be afraid to step up and be who God called you to be.

6) How to properly adjust my eating and workout habits in a way that's healthy, totally balanced, easy to stick to, and doesn't deprive me of things that I love. #Lifestylechange

7) You can't always write people off because of your past experiences with them. It might be nessacary to take a break from them, and have some healthy space...but people do grow and change. You can't get upset if it's not at the same rate you do, or as fast as you'd like...but when they do finally do it, and they've CONSISTANTLY SHOWN (that part is key) you the change...don't hold their past stuff against them. Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you.

8) "An apology without a change of actions, is nothing more than a formal excuse" - Jamal H Bryant. Amen to that.

9) That "things happen, people change, and life goes on". I can't remember where I read that quote, but it's so true. Sometimes we may feel like certain things or relationships will stay the same way forever...but that's not always true. And that's ok =)

10) That apparently guys do like girls in sweats, so I don't feel so bad about living in them for the past few months because I've been dancing non stop without a ton of time to change. Not that I'm going to make it a habit, but it is somewhat comforting.

11) That a guy and girl really can be just really good friends without anything going on, as long as both parties make their feelings on any sort of romantic stuff between them perfectly clear.

I was perusing around online in search of style inspiration, and I came across a picture of Rihanna in London rocking a plaid shirt and fur vest so I decided to put my spin on it. I've recently become a fan of red lips (thanks to a show I did last week, which the red clip in's are from as well) so I just kinda went RED with it. I should also note that the jeans are kind of a product of my handy work. They were regular distressed acid wash jeans from Dot's (by Sizzle), and I sprayed them down with a blackend silver glitter fabric paint spray (by Tulip), and then went through and sewed some rhinestone trim strips into the holes. Could I slowly be turning into a DIY diva? Only time will tell...

I was out shopping with my friend for my costume for our show, and I needed red lipstick to go with my costume so I pretty much picked up the 1st red lipstick I saw and then looked for a yellow based red gloss (I also put red glitter on top for the show btw). I didn't plan on wearing it again because I was never really a fan of BRIGHT lips on myself...but I fell in love with it so it's here to stay.

Oops, I did it again

Once again I went M.I.A on y'all, and I'm soooo sorry. Things have just been crazy for me as I just finished working on a show that my friend and I co-directed and co-choreographed, party planning, studying, the holidays....and then a little after Thanksgiving my grandfather passed away so my life has been super duper busy to say the least. Things have settled down now, so I'm looking forward to blogging on the regular and avoiding more random inactivity.

On a different note, with Christmas right around the corner & the holiday season being in full swing I feel kind of weird admitting that I haven't even done my Christmas shopping yet =O (except for like 2 gifts for certain people that I exchanged gifts early with)...so I'ma be in full ninja shopping mode for the rest of the week and hopefully I'll be able to blog a couple of holiday looks that I intend on rocking to some holiday parties this weekend so stay tuned!

I've Been Dazzled: ShoeDazzle Review

Ok I admit it, I've been holding out on y'all. Last month I became a member of ShoeDazzle, and I've been hooked ever since. For those of you that are unfamiliar with the company, it's sort of like a monthly shoe club (which is affiliated with Kim Kardashian, and Kim serves as the chief fashion stylist) where you can purchase shoes, handbags, or jewellery sets for a total $39.95 (Per item. Including tax, and standard shipping).

The Details:

Essentially what you do is take a style quiz, and you're shown pictures of different shoes, celebs, and brands. Then you have to select the ones that are closest to reflecting your personal style. After this one of the ShoeDazzle stylists will put together a showroom for you which will include shoes, handbags, and jewellery sets which will be available in your showroom soon after (and as new products are available, the stylists pick and choose some to add to your showroom according to the results from your quiz).

New stuff is added on the 1st of the month (and special shoes come out during the month sometimes. A collection benefiting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation comes out next month, featuring pink items), and you do have the option to skip a month if you don't want to purchase anything (which you can do as often as you want)...you just need to do it between the 1st and 5th of that month, as they will charge you the $39.95 on the 6th and you'll receive a credit good for any one item on the website. Taking the survey and getting your showroom put together is free, and they don't begin to charge you until after you make your first purchase. Just a heads up. You also get 20% off your 1st order, if your a 1st time customer. A good way to give ShoeDazzle a try, would be searching around on Groupon, and purchasing a $19 ShoeDazzle Groupon (and no, you don't have to live in the city listed on the groupon in order to purchase or use it). Those are only good for new ShoeDazzle members making their very first purchase though (and I don't think you get style points for that...or at least, I didn't when I used my groupon). For every item you purchase, you recieve 100 style points and if a friend you refer to ShoeDazzle signs up using your link and makes a purchase you get 200 style points. When you accumulate 1,000 style points you get a free credit good for any item on ShoeDazzle. They also have "DazzleDeals" on Tuesday and Thursday featuring items like luggage sets, PJ's, lingerie, skincare stuff, makeup sets, and more for $39.95.

What I've Bought So Far...
I've purchased 3 things from Shoedazzle (I've also got my eye on a few other things) which I've found to be of really good quality, and quite dazzling if I do say so myself =)

My 1st purchase (using my $19 Groupon) was a pair of "Rocket" Sequin Zebra Print High Top Sneakers by Rock & Candy. I found that they run pretty true to size, and they're reallllly comfy. They came with shoe bags as you can see, and they have a zipper on the side so I can get in and out of them with ease. I'm not even really a sneaker girl Bella's, but I loveeee these. And they match my Zebra Print Messenger Bag that I got on sale for $7 at H&M =)

2nd Purchase: Mel. B Pumps. Once in awhile ShoeDazzle has a celebrity design a shoe and the profits go to charity (the next pair come out on the 23rd I think, and they were designed by Carson Kressley). These were designed by Mel. B of the Spice Girls, and they've been selling out left and right (so if you get a chance to buy a pair, JUMP on it). According to the website, 100% of the profits from these shoes go to the Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. They do run a little small, so I had to go a size up (well, I would have gone half a size up...but I'm a 10...and there are no 10 1/2's so an 11 had to do. With a pair of Dr. Scholl's For Her insoles in there, I should be fine). These shoes are absolutely beauuuuuutiful. Fly, fierce, fabulous, I'm just in love with them. Too bad I can't wear them anytime soon because I have tendinitis in my knee, but as soon as I can I'm rocking these.

The rhinestones on the heel aren't like sealed though, so I heard that theres a little trick of painting over them with Mod Podge to seal them so that the stones don't fall out...and letting it like cure for a week. Which I shall do, once I get some time to go to the craft store. I'll report back with my results.

3rd Purchase: Cleary Riding Boots. I've been on the lookout for some shiny flat black boots foreverrr, and these definitely fit the bill. While they aren't like patent, they do give off a subtle sheen, fit true to size, and are quite comfy. All while giving off a bit of equestrian vibe.

So there you have it Bella's, my ShoeDazzle review and a look at some of the products that have gotten me hooked lol. I'd definitely recommend that you check ShoeDazzle out, as they've got some realllly cute things for decent prices which makes this savvy shopper incredibly happy. I've officially been Dazzled.

Hair Care: APL & Twistouts

As y'all know, I've been on a healthy haircare journey and I'm working on growing my hair out to MBL (Mid Back Length). For the most part I've been wearing my hair up in a bun (protective styling), using very little heat, and trying to keep my hair super moisturized...I recently got tired of the whole bun deal, so I decided to start wearing my hair down more often.

I'm just about APL (Arm Pit Length)...not full APL though, because my hair is layered. It should be noted that this picture was taken about a week or so after I had it flat ironed, and I was about 6 weeks post at the time. I'm not really due for another relaxer till November (I relax just about every 3 months).

Last night after a not so great experience with using Lottabody setting lotion on Wednesday, I decided to wash my hair and try a twistout for the first time (I usually do them for my sister, I've never tried it on myself). After I washed my hair, I used Creme of Nature's Lemongrass and Rosemary Leave-In Conditioner, Creme of Nature's Argan Oil Foaming Wrap Lotion, and Creme of Nature's Argan Oil Gloss & Shine Polisher. I combed the products through my hair with my Plugged In Wet Look Shower Comb, and ran a little bit of the Creme of Nature Argan Oil Treatment (not pictured) through my hair right before I twisted it.

I allowed my hair to air dry for a little while, and then twisted it while it was still damp. I took it down today, and this was the result...

I used a tiny bit of aloe vera gel in the front of my hair to slick down my edges, but other that I didn't really mess with anything too much. I just untwisted my hair, and ran some Hot Six Oil through it (I will be moisturizing and sealing my hair on a nightly basis btw). Not too shabby if I don't say so myself. I rocked it to school and whatnot, and I think it's a pretty simple look that'll be easy for me to do before I rush off to class in the mornings.

I try to avoid doing a lot of heat styling (read: flat ironing), so I plan on doing a lot of heat free styles (twist outs, braid outs, roller sets, etc) and flat ironing my hair about once a month. I have to be really careful, because my hair is double processed (relaxed and highlighted). I must say I'm really looking forward to experimenting with more styles, I'm on the grow Bella's! =)

Don't judge me, she was a gift from my late maternal grandpa so she's very special to me...and yes she is named after Chanel as in the French fashion house. I never got around to ordering it, but I found it in store last month when I went shopping with my girls so I snatched it up with the quickness. I was checking out the fashion news section on Celebuzz, and I came across these makeup tutorials by Stephen Moleseki. For those of you that are unfamiliar with his name, you're most likely familiar with his work. He's a celeb makeup artist to beauties like Kim Kardashian, The Pussycat Dolls, Mel B. and more. He's also the creator of the "Smoke and Mirrors Beauty" false lashes.

I'm loving the Leona Lewis and Nicole Scherzinger looks from the videos, and I'm thinking that I could most likely recreate Leona's with Woodwinked eyeshadow on the lid (from MAC. Keep in mind that I just about always use Indianwood paint pot under all of my eye shadows, and I'm about an NC45-50), and Nicole's with Electra on the lid (also from MAC, though I'll probably need to use a different base if I want it to pop...).

My school semester starts up again in a couple of weeks so it's back to the books and long hours studying all in the name of higher education. I'm not complaining at all though Bella's, I gotta do what I gotta do to move onward and upward. I also intend on looking incredibly fabulous while doing so. Since a lot of people seem to be going back to school around the same time, I thought that this would be a good time to do a post on back to school shopping tips:

1) Never stop playing dress up. How many of y'all remember playing dress up as a little kid and putting together random outfits (feeling extra fly because you were expressing yourself and being creative)? Even if you looked tacky as all get out, you were having fun. I think that we should never lose that (the creativity and expression, please say buh-bye to the tackiness), because that's what makes fashion fun. So go ahead and have fun and be creative when you're putting together your outfits, and keep playing dress up. Now that we're all grown up, the only difference should be that we're properly coordinated, and wearing clothes that actually fit our body, style, and wallet =)

2) CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSET. I can't stress that enough, go through your entire wardrobe (for all seasons, accessories, shoes, underclothes, everything) and see what you have. Ideally you should be able to organize things into about 4 piles: Keep, Donate, Trash (if it's in no condition to donate), and Tailor/Fix (things that would look a better if perhaps you changed the buttons, took up the hem, etc.).
Be sure to try everything on as you go along, and be honest about whether or not something fits you properly or no longer suits your style. If you haven't worn it in at least the past year and a half, chances are you're not gonna start now all of the sudden. This is probably the most extensive part, and it can be rather tedious...I suggest having a good friend over to help you not only clean and organize, but to offer a second opinion on how things fit when needed.

You should then be able to subdivide the "Keep" pile into 3 more: What you're going to keep out for the fall season, What you're going to put away for next summer, and then Summer pieces that you can use to transition into the fall.

Friendly Tip: Space Bags are a good way to store clothing that you wanna put away for next season. They're my best friend when it comes to closet organization.

3) Identify Your Aesthetic. Figure out what kinds of things suit your style, and what looks you're going for this season. There are a few ways to do this, and one of my favorite tips that I heard from a celeb stylist is to tear out pictures from magazines of looks and pieces that you like (you can also print out pics online) and put them in a binder. This way you can sort of identify what kinds of things you're attracted to, and it serves as outfit inspiration when you're out shopping and cleaning out your closet. Once you figure out what you're main style is (and what kinds of things your attracted to like tailoring, stuff inspired by a certain era, or certain kinds of detailing or embellishment), you can figure out how to use it to filter other looks you like.

For instance my style for the most part is feminine, fabulous, and glam. However I also like the sort of edgy rocker vibe, collegiate prep, girly and romantic, etc. So I try to find a way to make those different looks work for me, in a way that still remains to true to my style (by incorporating things like leather jackets and vests, leather fingerless gloves, letterman sweaters, varsity jackets, lace shirts and skirts, etc). This is an instance when those "Elle Collections" magazines come in handy, or any magazine that features ready to wear runway looks...because then you get to look at everything and see what inspires you. Sometimes it can be a color, a detail, or just the overall look that was achieved.

In terms of celeb style, it's helpful to identify which celebrities style you're inspired by and take a look at some of their outfits and figure out how to interpret it in a way that suits your style and wallet =) For the record more often than not I find myself inspired by people like: Kimora Lee Simmons, Victoria Beckham, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, and Vanessa and Angela Simmons.

4) Figure out which stores cater to your specific style needs. For instance, I know that if I need a good basic dress the best place for me to find one would be H&M or New York & Company...but if I'm looking for one that's on the cheaper side of things I'll stop by TJ Maxx or Marshall's. I also know that if I'm looking for decent quality basic tops, H&M is the place to go...or Rainbow if I can't get to H&M. Fun shoes and boots at a decent price? Burlington Coat Factory or Charlotte Russe. Cute trendy inexpensive pieces? Rainbow, Dots, Wet Seal, Forever 21, Charlotte Russe, H&M, Marshall's, or TJ Maxx. Fun inexpensive costume jewellery? Charlotte Russe or Forever 21 all day every day. Best place to shop that has discounts and whatnot on a regular basis? New York & Company or Charlotte Russe (Happy Hour, etc). You gotta know where to find what you need Bella's.

5) Timing is everything. In my opinion there are 2 times that are ideal to shop for fall clothes / back to school shopping. The first would be during the summer when all the fall stuff is on sale, so nobody is really paying it any mind and stuff is ridiculously cheap in EVERY store (especially in places like Burlington Coat Factory). This is probably the best time to stock up on basics, and odd pieces that strike your fancy. It's rather tedious, and you will have to comb through clearance racks but it's worth it in the end...and it's kind of fun if you bring a friend.

The second best time, is right about now... early to mid august, because that's when all the new fall stuff comes out so you can get pick up some nice fun and festive pieces that you may be lacking in your wardrobe.

Friendly Tip: If you have AAA, remember the wonders of the AAA member discounts (as mentioned in this post) =)

6) Sign up for text message and email alerts from your favorite stores, especially the ones that you frequent the most. This is a good way to find out about sales and discounts that aren't always highly advertised. Not to mention most stores send out a lot free shipping promotional emails, so that helps with stuff that are online exclusives.

Victoria's Secret Pink Nation Fall Shopping Event Review & Mini Haul

Yesterday in some of the Victoria's Secret PINK stores, they held their Pink Nation Private Fall Shopping Event.

To back that up for those of y'all who aren't familiar with Pink Nation, it's kind of like their fan club for those of us that really love Victoria's Secret Pink products. You can sign up online at Pink Nation, membership is free, and some of the benefits include access to PINK events, ongoing offers and freebies, sneek peeks at the latest PINK goods and more.

The Private Shopping Event that was held yesterday was exclusive to PINK Nation members (you'd receive either a text message invite, or get a print out pass that you'd need to show when you came to the store to get in), and it featured products from the VS Pink Fall Collection. I went to the VS PINK store at my local mall, and it was PACKED. There was also a DJ in the house, and some giveaways (raffle tickets were handed out at the door) however the DJ left much to be desired in my opinion.

Anyhoo, there was a one night only discount offer in effect for the evening which hadn't really been advertised... but these flyers had been strategically placed around the store so that shoppers would be informed.

In keeping with the theme of protecting our skin while remaining fly, fierce, and fabulous this summer, the second essential beauty product I'm featuring today is EOS (Evolution of Smooth) Lip Balm Smooth Sphere.

I noticed it one day in Wal*Mart (it's available in CVS as well) and decided to give it a try. I haven't looked back since. Not only is it packaged in a ridiculously cute way (it reminds me of Easter eggs lol), but it keep my lips soft and smooth without an overwhelming scent or taste.

According to their website the EOS lip balm in 95% organic, 100% natural, and is free of gluten, petrolatum, parabens, and phthalate. It's not tested on animals, and it's packed with Vitamin E, Shea Butter, and Jojoba Oil. Woo Woo!

It comes in: Summer Fruit, Honeysuckle Honeydew, Medicated Tangerine, Sweet Mint, and Lemon Drop SPF 15 (which is great staple for the summer time, as our lips need to be protected too Bella's). I've tried a few of the available flavors, and they all were pretty light and true to their flavor.

All in all the fact that I get a little flavor, some SPF (via the Lemon Drop SPF 15 Flavor), and soft smooth lips out of this lip balm makes it a summertime beauty essential in my book.

Summer Beauty Essentials Week: Hawaiian Tropic Shimmer Effect Sunscreen

Since summer officially started a few weeks ago, I thought I'd take this week and feature one of my favorite summer beauty essentials everyday...

First on my list is the SPF 40 Hawaiian Tropic Shimmer Effect Lotion Sunscreen with mica minerals that I purchased yesterday at CVS (I think it was about $8.00 regular price, and I'm pretty sure that I got a discount).

It has UVB/SPF and UVA protection

It's creamy, which left my skin super soft

Smells like fresh coconut (YUM!)

and it has the most beautiful golden shimmer effect, highlighting your skin tone

So essentially it does just what it promises on the packaging: protects, pampers and nourishes your skin.

It gave my skin this golden shimmery glow, which actually makes me want to put on sunscreen LOL. I'm probably going to be rocking this year round because of this (technically you're supposed to wear sunscreen year round, and while out skiing to protect your skin btw Bella's), and I'm absolutely in love with it. Just like other sunscreens, be sure to put it on at least 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapply after swimming or towel drying.

It also comes in SPF 20, and there's a Shimmer Effect Coconut Papaya After Sun Lotion available from the line as well.

Victoria's Secret Sale & The 7 Way Bio Fit Bra

I hit up the Victoria's Secret sale the other day, and scored the Bio Fit 7 way bra on sale for $29.99. I mainly needed to wear it as a strapless, but when I tried to wear it any other way I couldn't figure out how to make it work. There are 2 obvious hook areas on the inside of the front of the bra, but I could never find the ones for the back. Until it hit me a few minutes ago LOL. I was looking at the Bio Fit 7 Way bras online, and could see that there is indeed something that the back of the straps are supposed to hook into (you get a pair of straps that match the bra, and pair of clear straps). So I looked at the back of the bra that I bought, and realized that there are little slits on the sides and back (kind of in-between the lining) for the straps to hook into. So, hopefully this helps somebody else out there that may have been confoozled by the 7 way bra.

Spotlight: Versace for H&M

Stop the presses, and hold the hell up. It's just been announced that Versace and H&M have a collabo coming out on November 17th. According to the official press release, it'll include ranges for women, men, and select home pieces. It'll be available in 300 H&M stores worldwide, ANDDD online (YAYYYY! *happy dance*). There will also be a pre-spring collection designed by Donatella which will be available exclusively online starting January 19th (2012) to countries that have online H&M sales.

The womenswear collection (my main focus) is said to include dresses that feature studded leather, silk colorful prints, and accessories including costume jewellery and heels. Menswear will feature sharp tailoring (and the perfect tux), and belts and jewellery. Homeware will include cushions and bedspreads.

All I'm saying is that black leather studded shift dress that Donatella is rocking SHALL be mine. Sounds like we're going to be serving major fashion this fall Bella's, time to show the kids how it's done.

Breaking Down The Formula Pt. I: Fit is Essential

I've been thinking about a lot of the different things I've learned over the years about fashion and style, and in my opinion it all comes down to 4 things.

Knowing your shape / body type, and what works for you and flatter your shape (fit, sizing, etc.)
Knowing what wardrobe essentials you need, and knowing how to make them work for you
Understanding what you gravitate to stylisticly, and finding these kind of pieces that flatter your body type and are also workable wardrobe essentials.
Shopping within your means. This means not buying things you can't afford, because debt is SO not fly, fierce, and fabulous. At the end of the day, I refuse to spend money I can't afford, on things I don't really want or need, to impress people I don't like.

Now that all sounds lovely, but how does one accomplish this you ask?

You have to start by identifying your body type, are you an hourglass? pear shape? apple? etc, and figure out what features you'd like to reveal or conceal. For example: Do you wanna show off your legs and conceal your arms? Btw, it's also important to understand where to draw the line with showing skin and when and where it's appropriate. A good way to start figuring this out, would be by checking out "The Science of Sexy" by Bradley Bayou. He's a fashion designer, who wrote the book about understanding your body type, what pieces work for your shape (though some pieces are universal), and his 10 commandments of style. His book is the basis of the "Look Your Best" feature online at Instyle.com, so you can check it out there. All you need is some measuring tape (to get your accurate measurements), and you're good to go.

It's important to understand that it's not about trying to hide or cover up "flaws" but celebrating what you've got, working with it, and presenting your best self.

Review: Wild Rose Pink Glitter Shoes from Charlotte Russe...

When I saw these pink glittery platform pumps by Wild Rose online at Charlotte Russe, I fell in love.

They seemed like my Dorothy meets pink perfection moment, and a much cheaper alternative to these $85 glittery platforms from Bakers (which I will probably purchase soon now) so I ordered them from Charlotte Russe (which is one of my all time favorite stores). When I got them in the mail yesterday I was SOUPED, however when I tried them on they didn't fit =( I ordered my right size (Size 10), however they seem to run a size and a half too small. I had to jam my foot into the shoe, and I couldn't really walk too far in them due to the sizing....if I tried to wear them out, I probably wouldn't last 10 minutes. I've never had this problem with shoes by Wild Rose, or any shoes from Charlotte Russe...but it is what it is. So while they are beautiful, if you happen to order them definitely go up at least a size or size and a half.

All's well that ends well though, because I returned them yesterday in the store without any issues, and purchased this sparkly cami for $10 (I was also able to use one of those coupons they're offering on the home page of their website). I plan on wearing it under a sheer off the shoulder top, ala Keshia in the 2nd episode of "Single Ladies" on VH1.

The platform pumps are realllly comfy, and I want to go back and get them in the nude color too.

Review: French Wrap Plus Professional Manicure Kit

I recently got the June sales ad from Sally Beauty Supply in the mail, and inside they were advertising a series of French Wrap Plus kits by Nail Bliss. I was intrigued so I did a little bit of looking around online to find out how they worked and decided to give them a try...

I purchased this Nail Bliss French Wrap Manicure Kit in Thick White (they have thick white for longer nails, thin white for shorter nails, and then black thick if that's your cup of tea) currently on sale this month for $11.99 (Regular price $14.99). You could also paint over them if you want.

Packaging

The kit contains: 56 French Wrap Plus nail tips, a base seal polish, a top seal polish, brush on-glue, a white and pink mini buffer, and instructions. The package says it contains enough product for 3 applications.

The main thing you need to know about the french wrap plus system, is that they are NOT acrylic nails. It's pretty much like a gel wrap (I've never had gel's put on, but I'm guessing this is what they'd be like) on your actual nail. When you put these on, they just cover your nail and don't hang over the tip like an extension...as they're not intended to be extensions. Actually, had I remembered that these weren't acrylics, I probably wouldn't have broken 2 nails (I tend to try to pick up and open things with my nails sometimes...).

Essentially what you have to do is clean and buff your natural nails, size the appropriate french wraps (they have numbers on the applicator. I didn't realize this at first, if I did I would have saved myself some time), glue them on, clip the applicator off with nail clippers, buff and file, then apply the base seal and then the top seal. It sound somewhat tedious, but I think it entire process took me under 25 minutes. The promo video below from NailBlissProducts shows the process...

I kept the wraps on for a week, and I think they could have stayed on longer had I been more careful with them. Also, since I'm right handed, I think I didn't apply the first 3 nails on my right hand properly...because I had to reapply them a couple of times during the course of the week. So that was completely my bad, but the nails on my left hand were totally fine until I tried to open a metal hanger clip thing with my nail...

1 Week Later...with my busted nail that I didn't fix properly. I didn't have a lot of time, so I just glued the broken piece back on.

Overall I think that the French Wrap Plus Kit was a good buy, and is definitely something I would purchase again in the near future. It's pretty easy to use, and the nails don't chip or anything. If you need to do a touch up you just take the "gel" part off with non acetone nail polish remover, buff the white french wrap part, and then paint over it again with the base seal and top seal. As long as you remember that these are not meant to be extensions / acrylics, and don't try to use the nails to open things like you might with acrylics, you should be fine for a week minimum. I'd also like to add that the french wraps didn't compromise the overall health of my nails underneath, which was really important to me.

It's actually supposed to be a dress, however I felt that when I tried to wear it that way it looked a little flimsy and uh...well, cheap (it's strapless, and it had this little self tie belt thing on the chest). I'll be the first one to admit that this blog has been pictorally challenged, but that's all about to change this week. I just finished shooting some pictures for a new feature that I'm going to start this week called "Inside Ms. Fab's Closet" which will feature different looks and some of my favorite things from my wardrobe as modeled and styled by me, myself, and I. This is really something that I should have thought about doing sooner, as my dad is a award winning professional photographer and I'm a professional model...but at any rate, I'll start posting some things this week and I hope that y'all enjoy it. I'll be breaking down the looks as well, and once I get started I'd love to know if y'all would prefer to see more of that or of the "Look of the Day" posts that I try to put up somewhat regularly.

Fun With Crackle Nail Polish and The Art of Layering Bracelets

I've been on a crackle nail polish kick lately (more pictures to come!), but in this particular picture I was wearing 1 Coat of "Black Expressionism" by China Glaze (which is essentially a basic dark black) under a thick coat of Sally Hansen's Crackle Overcoat in "Antiqued Gold." The instructions on the crackle overcoat state that you can use a thicker or thinner coat depending on what effect you're trying to achieve.

I've also had a thing for layering bracelets this summer, and I've found that the trick to getting it right is staying in a particular color palate (I usually coordinate around 3 colors), making sure that the bracelets are about the same width, and picking 1 metallic accent color (silver, gold, bronze, etc).

L-R: All of the thin beaded bracelets are from H&M ($3.95 each. You get 6 per bundle), the larger gold beaded bracelet is one of my uncle's designs, and then the yellow and gold chain link bracelet with the yellow suede is from by Mixit ($9.95 Online at JcPenney)

Hair Care: Aloe Vera Gel

As you all know, I've been on a healthy hair journey for about a couple of years or so now. I'm due for a relaxer touch up, but I'm pretty sure I've VERY close to APL (arm pit length), with the overall goal of getting to and maintaining MBL (mid back length). One of the things that's really helped me retain my length is protective styling (along with very little heat styling. My hair hasn't seen any sort of flat iron since December, and before then it was only once a month). I've been rocking buns non stop, however after awhile my hair would get a little discombobulated and need to be tamed so I'd start rocking headbands and scarves to contain the situation. This is mainly because while I don't have a problem with using gel to initially slick back my hair, I HATE using jam (for those of you that aren't familiar with it, it's like a heavy duty extra hold hair gel... but like if you sweat, it runs down your face and what not. I felt like Perry The Platypus from Phineas and Ferb =/ ) and some hair gels and I just don't get along.

This all changed however when I was reading up on Aloe Vera hair products over at Keep It Simple Sistah, and came across this post about using Aloe Vera Gel (I've heard that there are a lot of benefits to using Aloe Vera in hair, so I had to check it out). I needed to contain my hair before I taped an audition for this show (I'm also an actress Bella's, I wear many hats. All of which are equally fabulous), so I decided to try using 100% Aloe Vera Gel by Fruit of the Earth to slick back my hair (AFTER moisturizing my hair with my trusty Olive Oil Moisturizing Lotion by Organic Root Stimulator). I think it was like $4.99 or something at Wal-Mart, it's in the skincare section and it can also be used for sunburn and dry irritated skin.

Armed with my aloe vera gel, a brush, a couple of those long white head wrap strip things, and my scarf, I got to work. I put a decent amount of the gel in my hair, brushed it back, wrapped it and tied it down with my scarf. When I took my scarf off later in the day, I was pleased to find neatly slicked back hair that didn't feel dried out or look gelled down. Just smooth, soft, and my wavey curly new growth was slicked back and in check. Ever since then, the Aloe Vera Gel has been a keeper in my book, and I've found that putting a little in my curly haired sisters mane (after moisturizing) helps to define her curls and keep them from looking stringy and weighed down like it did when we tried other styling products in her hair (wash days weren't really the problem, it was those days in between that had it looking questionable).

Overall Aloe Vera Gel is officially one of my new trusty hair care products, and it'll definitely be on standby during the humid summer months 'round here.

Spotlight: Sneak Preview of JLO and Marc Anthony's Line for Kohl's and Kardashian Kollection for Sears Info

You've probably heard about this by now, but Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony (somewhat respectively) have a Womens and Menswear collection coming out this fall at Kohl's (and kohls.com), along with a home collection that they've collaborated on. Below is a video from the Kohl's Editor's Preview Event which was posted on Marc Anthony's website, and while I couldn't really see a lot of the details from the women's collection in the video... I did see something furry which was enough to get me souped. I can't wait to see what this collection has to offer this fall, along with the Kardashian line that will be launching over at Sears in August.

According to The Budget Fashionista, The "Kardashian Kollection" is geared towards consumers between 17 and 35, and will offer apparel, shoes, gloves, hats, lingerie, wallets, jewelery, and handbags which reflect the personal style of Kim, Khloe, and Kourtney. While I am I fan of their personal style, I've been rather underwhelmed by the offerings of their previous fashion collaborations and collections...so I'm really hoping this "Kollection" for Sears is sickening (read: FIERCE).

Let Me Put You Up On Game: Scoop Neck Stretch Tank Dress from New York and Co & Discount Info You May Not Know...

It seems like over the past couple of years New York and Company picks a couple of dress designs and turns it out. The fit will be on point, it'll come in a bevy of colors, and it'll look fabulous dressed up or down. Last year the Bryant Park Tee Dress was that dress for me, and while I'm kinda bummed that I didn't snatch it up in more colors (and prints. It came in Zebra print y'all), I'm glad that I did get it in some really good basic colors. This year, New York and Company's Scoop Neck Stretch Tank Dress (Regular Price $34.95, currently on sale for $24.46) is that dress for me. It looks just like a sheath dress (an amazing wardrobe staple), yet it's made out of stretch fabric so it hugs the curves amazingly. I've purchased it in black and white, and I'm going back to snatch it up in a few more colors (since they just put out some new ones =) ).

Now about that discount info I hinted at in the title, this one is for all y'all out there that are AAA members. You know how sometimes you get those flyer's and whatnot in the mail from AAA about discounts that you can get at other merchants? Well pay attention to it, because when you shop at the said merchants stores more than likely they're not going to tell you about it. One such place would be Ny and Company. Yes you read that right you can use your AAA discount there (IN STORE), when you're ready to make your purchase make sure you tell them that you're a member and have your card handy to show them. Sometimes you can use it in conjunction with other discounts in the store, and sometimes you can't... but every little bit helps...and it's definitely saved me quite a bit of money. I was saddened to learn that today at 1:30 am, the incredibly fabulous Elizabeth Taylor passed away at the age of 79. Known for her talent (acting in many classic movies such as Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Cleopatra, and many more), undeniably timeless beauty, and work as an advocate for AIDS research (she was the Founding International Chairman of amFAR), she will most certainly be missed. My prayers are with her loved ones during this time of loss and sadness.

Awhile back I purchased the Hungry Girl "200 Under 200" Cookbook (featuring 200 recipes under 200 calories. It had some good stuff in there btw), and I'd noticed that these things called Vita Tops were mentioned a few times. According to the nutritional benefits stated on they're website, the 100 Calorie Muffin tops (they also make brownies, which are really good, amongst other things):

Have 4-10g of fiber
15 Vitamins and Minerals
Low sodium
No Cholesterol
3-5g Protein
Low Fat
Trans Fat free
Anddd you can walk them off in 13-15 minutes

If you're anything like me, you're probably thinking all that stuff sounds nice but is it any good? Curiosity eventually got the best of me, so on one of my trips to Target I picked up a few and I've gotta say, I'm officially a fan. So far my favorites are the Apple Crumb, BlueBran, and CranBran. The Golden Corn Vita Tops are ok, if you prepare it right (like this easy recipe for Strawberry Shortcake. I made it last night, tres yummy!). On it's own, my cousin and I think that it tastes like...well, playdoh (which was a let down, since I was expecting it to taste kinda like corn bread or something). Not that we've ever eaten playdoh, it just tastes like how play doh smells...if that makes sense. Anyhoo, they've also got some really yummy recipe and serving suggestions on Vitalicious website, my faveorites being some ice cream on top of a Apple Crumb Vita Top (My personal favorite is the Carmel Cone ice cream cup by Skinny Cow), and BlueBerry Cheesecake VitaMuffins. Personally I didn't have the time or patience to make the BlueBerry Cheesecake VitaMuffins with the mix, so I made my own bootleg version: 1 BlueBran Vita Top + 2 TBSP of Cream Cheese mixed with sugar (I don't really remember how much sugar I used. Let's say about 1 TBSP), and then I crumbled half a graham cracker on top. It was pretty good, and it actually kind of reminded me of the Carrot Cake that I get at one of my favorite local restaurants (I know, I know, how do Blueberries translate to Carrot Cake right? Whatever, it was still bangin'). So next time your in your local Target, or market, breeze by the frozen food section (sometimes they're in the organic / healthy frozen section) and check out the Vita Tops.

Backstory: My Journey to Healthy Hair Care...

and what I've learned along the way.

It's been a long road, but most certainly well worth it. When I was a little girl, Mommy Fab used to do the old school press and curl with on my hair with a hot comb and some grease. For a very long time I was rocking a spiky 'do that was about two inches long ala Halle Berry (except my in my opinion, my hair looked greasy), although since I've always had a lot of spunk it wasn't that big of a deal. After that (and starting to relax my hair) I wore braids with extensions for years, which helped me grow my hair to almost shoulder length (though if I knew then what I know now, I could of surpassed that).

Then I started my salon saga...which has had a few bumps along the way, that I mostly chalk up to my lack of hair care knowledge and doing things like: relaxing too often, flat ironing on a daily basis (which is BAD, BAD, BADD! especially since I wasn't using any heat protectant. I just sprayed my hair with some oil sheen and proceeded to flat iron it, thinking I was doing something smh), lots of bonded tracks (for those of you that don't know, that's when they add extensions to your hair using glue instead of sewing them in or something like that), and improper removal of the said tracks. Btw, I've been going to the same stylist (and I've tried the Dominican Salon 'round my way a few times) for almost 10 years and I'm not throwing any shade at all. She's really good at what she does, but I had to realize that it's up to me to figure out how to take care of my hair and treat it properly. It'd be ridiculous for me to run around abusing it, and expect her to wave a magic wand and fix it in a few hours. You can dress it up any way you want (and she definitely made my hair look good), but at the end of the day a mess is a mess.

I pretty much just treated my hair like something that was just there to cover my tracks, instead of focusing on it's health. Hey, you live and you learn right? Almost two years ago a light bulb went off (when I was looking up hair care stuff online, because I'd made up in my mind that I didn't wanna feel like I was going to be weave dependent for years to come), I realized that I wasn't on the right track when it came to taking care of my hair, and that if I took care of it properly it actually would grow and become healthier.

By means of research, reading, trial, and error, I learned a lot of things about how to properly care for my hair (and my sisters' hair, one of which has a wave nouveau, the other is relaxed), and I don't consider myself to be this all knowing hair care guru...but to paraphrase the words of the great Maya Angelou: now that I know better, I'm doing better. It took a lot of patience, but I nursed my hair from about chin length to now being a couple inches away from APL ( I should be there by August =D) by mainly spacing out my relaxers (once every three months), protective styling (styles that protect the ends of your hair. I usually go with sew in ponytails, with my own hair in a braid underneath), and being sure to keep my hair moisturized. My overall goal is somewhere around MBL (Mid Back Length), and to be able to do a gorgeous weave free rollerset that resembles Melanie Fiona's hair.

Paying it Forward: An Open Letter About Hair Care

This afternoon I recieved a call from one of the women at my church looking for some advice about hair care. She told me that she'd been calling some of the women from church because she's been experincing a lot of hair breakage (she's a cancer patient) and has a itchy scalp, and she wasn't too sure what to do about it. I told her to first talk to her doctor and see if there are any products or ingredients that he reccomends for her to try or stay away from, and then I recommended a few hair care products that have helped me care for my hair (which I'm happy to report is on the grow, I'm pretty sure that I'll be APL -Arm Pit Length- or a little past that by August) and my sisters hair. I'm wouldn't exactly say that I'm this huge hair care guru, but I've picked up a lot of tips and things about hair care by doing a lot of reading, research, trial, and error and I'm more than happy to pay it forward. I pretty much just explained some hair care basics (like moisture, wrapping your hair, using deep conditioner, being careful when you comb it. BTW, the only reason I mentioned relaxers at all is because I happen to know that she used to relax her hair...and I also needed to address some of the hair care no-no's that seem to be floating around my church...like the greasing or oiling up hair before a press and curl *shudders* ) to get her started...I didn't want to overwhelm her with a bunch of stuff (like porosity control, moisture and protien balance, protien treatments, etc.) so I decided to type up a quick letter that I'm going to give her tonight (along with some deep conditioner) explaining some things about hair care, which I'm sharing with y'all below...hopefully it'll help somebody else out there too (and if there's anything else that you suggest that I share with her, let me know!):

First I would recommend checking with your doctor to see if there are any particular ingredients or products that you should avoid using, as you don’t want to cause any reactions or side effects in addition to any medications that you take.

Keeping it simple works best when taking care your hair, and to avoid further breakage the main things to remember are to keep your hair moisturized (as dryness is a prominent cause of breakage), protected (or at least don’t manipulate it too much like by using chemical products like relaxers, and try to avoid pressing and flat ironing it for awhile. Though if you do choose to flat iron it in the future be sure to use a heat protectant – Crème of Nature’s Argan Oil Gloss & Shine Polisher is a good multi purpose product, that also acts as a heat protectant – and wrap it to maintain your style), wrap it night while sleeping (or you can sleep on satin pillowcases if it’s more convenient), and when you comb it be sure to use a wide tooth comb and comb from tip to root to avoid unnecessary breakage. You really don’t need a million different hair products; just a few good staple products are all that’s necessary.

I know that you said that you have issues with an itchy scalp, and hard as it is you don’t want to scratch too much as this could cause more problems. I would suggest using a shampoo that caters to this (Crème of Nature makes a Red Clover & Aloe Soothing Shampoo for Dry Hair and Flaking Scalp). Tea Tree Oil also works well for itchy scalp relief, though it’s important to be careful and use it as directed on the packaging.

If you wear hats and things, it’d be a good idea to put a satin lining in them or wear a scarf underneath so that the hat doesn’t rough your hair up and cause additional breakage.

Also it’s a good idea to limit how often you use heat to style your hair (like using a flat iron, hot comb, or something like that. Using a hairdryer to roller set your hair, or with your deep conditioner is totally fine) …once a week is ok, once a month is ideal. Wearing different textured hair styles can be helpful if you want to try something new…like braid outs to achieve waves (when you cornrow your hair overnight using a setting lotion, and take it down the next morning), or Bantu knots or roller sets for curls. By the way, you should never use oil directly before you flat iron your hair. It’s essentially going to fry your hair the same way you would fry chicken.

If you do choose to relax your hair at some point (though this shouldn’t be anytime soon, and definitely not until after your doctor says that it’s ok), spacing out the relaxers is a good idea (like every 3 months. The textured styles that I mentioned above, in addition to keeping your hair moisturized should help manage new growth).

Everyday:

It’s a good idea to “Moisturize and Seal” your hair twice a day (Once in the morning, once at night) by first using a moisturizing hair lotion (Organic Root Stimulator’s Olive Oil Moisturizing Hair Lotion is really good, or if you want something a bit lighter in weight you could try Elasta QP’s Anti Breakage Oil Moisturizer. The Olive Oil Lotion –which I recommend- is thicker, and is good for hair that’s thicker in texture and for use in the fall through spring seasons when the air is cold and dry and sucks moisture from hair much like it does to skin. Elasta QP’s Moisturizer is good for hair prefers lighter products, and is good to use in the summertime when it’s humid. As a general rule of thumb, the first ingredient in a moisturizer will be water), and then seal in the moisture with a oil (Like Hot Six Oil, Olive Oil, Canola Oil, Coconut Oil, etc.).

Wrapping your hair at night is also beneficial, preferably by using a satin or silk scarf (or sleeping on a satin or silk pillowcase works too, whichever is more convenient).

Once A Week:

Washing your hair once a week should suffice, and using moisturizing products is important. You can start off by doing a hot oil treatment on dry hair if you’d like (You can use Hot Six Oil for this if you want, or olive oil…even canola oil works well in a pinch), then shampoo your hair (if your looking for product recommendations, Crème of Nature is a pretty good line…and their Kiwi and Citrus Moisturizing Shampoo works really well. Essentially you want to look for a moisturizing shampoo that is for dry and or breaking hair, or you could use the shampoo for itchy scalp that I recommended. You only need to use one…I prefer the Kiwi and Citrus shampoo, though if your scalp is causing a lot of discomfort then the Soothing Shampoo is perfectly fine), then you can use a deep conditioner (In a pinch you can use a regular conditioner, though a true deep conditioner would be one that instructs you to leave it on for more than 10 minutes, with a plastic cap, and under heat like a hair dryer or blow dryer. Crème of Nature’s Argan Oil Intensive Conditioning Treatment works really well, and I’ve included a few packages for you to try at home) to which you can add things like oil (Hot Six Oil, Olive Oil, Canola Oil, whatever you have around the house), honey, and even the Gloss and Shine Polisher that I mentioned. Whatever you decide to use, you need to be sure to comb it through your hair, put a plastic cap on (or you can tie a plastic bag over your hair if you don’t have any plastic caps around), and either sit under the hair dryer or use a blow dryer (though if you use the blow-dryer, don’t put it too close to the bag. We don’t want to set anything on fire) for at least 10 – 15 minutes (or what ever the packaging on the deep conditioner says). After you wash the deep conditioner out, you can use some leave in conditioner (which is important. In a pinch you can use a little regular conditioner), the Gloss and Shine polisher (if you decide to try it), whatever styling products you use, and allow your hair to air-dry then style however you like.

Foodie Friday: Rice Pudding

Happy Foodie Friday! This week I've chosen to spotlight this recipe for rice pudding that I found over at Glamour.com. I just use it as a guideline though, as I like to make substitutions (that are healthier, more convenient, and sometimes tastier) after I get used to working with a particular recipe. Instead of Milk, Short Grained Rice, Vanilla Bean, and Agave Nectar (which I've yet to try) I use Soy Milk (by Silk. YUMM!), Brown Rice, Vanilla Extract, and Honey. I also like to toss in a little cinnamon and golden raisins for some extra flavor and sweetness. Overall it's a pretty tasty treat, though it takes awhile to make (according to the recipe, it has to simmer for 40 minutes) so when I whip some up, I make a little extra so it's around for the next few days. Here's a funny story, even though I'm by no means a stranger to the kitchen every once in awhile we all have an oops moment...right? Well I do anyways. So when I made the rice pudding a few days ago, I was adding the vanilla extract to the pudding (which was already starting to cook on the stove) and apparently I wasn't as careful as I thought and I spilled a few drops near the burner and on the stove top. That doesn't sound too bad right? Well, how many of y'all know that vanilla extract is flammable? I looked down and there was a rather large isolated blue flame chillin' like a villain on my stove top. Thank God I noticed it, cause I probably would of accidentally set my shirt and tummy on fire (amongst other things) since I was standing pretty close to the stove top. All ended well though, as I blew the fire out quickly (and wiped down the stove top with water), and my rice pudding came out delish. It's a teachable moment though Bella's: Pay attention in the kitchen, and remember to check for and handle flammable ingredients with care so we can avoid moment's like these. It kind of reminded me of that episode of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air when Will tried to flambe bananas in the kitchen...

Introducing: The First Official Foodie Friday & Salmon Balls with Salsa

Last month I started overhauling my eating habits. Generally speaking I'd usually try to make healthy choices, but I've finally learned to combine that with things that taste amazing and not overeating (which I didn't realize I'd been doing until I lost about a good 5 - 7 lbs that I don't remember gaining in the first place LOL. Don't get it twisted though I never set out to lose weight, I just wanted to make healthier and smarter lifestyle choices). While on this journey, I've come across some delicious new foods, seasonings, and recipes which inspired me to start "Foodie Friday's." So every Friday I'll be posting different recipes and reviews, sprinkled with my lil tips and tricks for making things taste extra fabulous (And move along a lil faster. I'm not one of those girls that likes to spend all day in the kitchen. I want my food to taste yummy, be healthy, and ready as fast as possible thankyouverymuch).

First up this week is this recipe for Salmon Balls with Fresh Tomato Salsa that I found over at Self.com a long time ago, but never actually got around to making until yesterday. I should mention that I really didn't feel like making fresh salsa (because I also made Mini Parmesan Biscuits from scratch yesterday), so I ate mine with a side of All Natural Medium Picante Sauce by Great Value from Walmart...but I'm sure you could use any salsa or spicy sauce that you have on hand, or you could be all extra fancy and make your own. I pretty much followed the recipe for the Salmon Balls to the T (though I doubled everything, as I had to make a bigger batch since I was cooking for my family as well. As is the recipe makes 16 Salmon Balls, with a serving being 4 per person), minus serving them with the Arugula (they didn't have it at the market that I went to), and they taste really good. Their texture is reminiscent of crab cakes, the golden raisins give it a lil bit of sweetness, and once you dip that in your sauce (or salsa) you get some sweet and spicy goodness making this my brand new favorite way to cook salmon.
